2 Gun Action Challenge Match 1-18-2014

Stage 3 (the first one in the video, the first I shot) was a good opportunity to shoot at 200-150 yards. The HAMR worked well on this stage, though I used the Aimpoint Micro for position three because of the way the sunlight was coming through the scope. The wide field of view on the HAMR match target to target transitions easy. Every other stage I used the Aimpoint micro mounted on top. I have the Aimpoint zeroed at 50 yards, and the bore offset isn’t much worse to deal with than standard tall Aimpoint micro mounts. I was only 2nd by 3 seconds, the 30-40 yard pistol shots on Stage 2 (last in the video) cost me. It’s been a while since I have shot that far with iron sights on a pistol.

Crimson Trace Rail  Master Pro
This is a light/laser combo unit available with green or red laser and a 100 lumen light.  It runs on a single CR123 battery for up to an hour of continuous use.  It has 4 modes; laser only, light only, light and laser, and strobing light and laser.  MSRP $279 for red, $379 for Green.

Glock 42 Subcompact .380. While I would have preferred to see this in 9mm.  It is small without being too small, and it has the same trigger pull and reset as a full size Glock.  This is a critical feature for continuity of training for shooters who use full size Glocks most of the time.

Samson Manufacturing has released their own line of Aimpoint mounts and their own 3.5x magnifier.  I hope to do a complete review of these products in the future.

Hornady’s new safe is the ideal balance of security and accessbility.  Users can use a mechanical key, combination code pad, magnetic card, or wrist band to open the safe.  When accessed the lid springs open presenting the handgun contained in a slot with thick foam on both sides.  It plugs into the wall and uses AA batteries for back up.  This design really addresses a lot of the things wrong with other electronic safes as far as ease of use goes.  MSRP will be around $250.00

Safariland GLS holster.  The retention device is disengaged when the shooter grips the handgun naturally.

New Safariland holster for red dot equipped pistols.  It has a cover that completely encloses the pistol protecting the sight from environmental conditions.  The cover swings out of the way on the draw.

Safariland 7TS Injection Molded holsters.  These are available with both SLS or ALS mechanisms.  Safariland Reps stated that the material is stronger than their orginal holster designs.  MSRP is around $50.00.

Magpul MOE AK47 Mag.  Significantly lighter than traditional AK mags.  These are supposed to work in the Sig 556R as well.

TSD Combat Systems Kompressor

I’ve been using the TSD Kompressor for a few months now and I’ve found it to be an improvement over other muzzle devices I have used in the past. The Kompressor offers compensation on par with dedicated competition muzzle brakes, without the obnoxious muzzle blast. Muzzle blast can send debris flying when shooting prone obscuring targets down range, increased concussion can be painful to the shooter and match staff when working around obstacles. The Kompressor is truly a multifunctional muzzle device

September 2013 Multi-Gun Matches

2 Gun Action Challenge Match 9-21-2013

This match was a bit different in that we shot the first 3 stages, scores were calculated then shooters faced off in a man vs man shoot off.  The winner’s time was reduced by 30 seconds and the loser’s time added 30 seconds.  Hans ran a tight race against me, I rushed my last few shots not taking enough time to get a clear sight picture costing me the shoot off.  Losing the shoot-off dropped me down from 7th to 14th place/30 shooters.

Phoenix Rod and Gun 3 Gun 9-22-2013

PRG’s 3 Gun match does not change much month to month, but it is an opprtunity to work on speed more than I can at the 2 Gun Action Challenge match which tends to be more accuracy centric with its’ scoring.  The Trijicon SRS turned out to be a disappointing optic.  The day before at 2 Gun some weird halo effects were noticeable around the reticle particularly during the shoot-off stage.  Looking into the sun on stage 1 at PRG the dot was not clear at all.  Depending on the angle I looked at targets a red rectangle appeared around the reticle.  When I went prone the dot became more clear and I could shoot the targets at range easier.   This review on The Bang Switch is entirely accurate.  I still managed to place 1st/6 in Tac-Limited.

Rio Salado Rifle Match 9-29-2013

I switched back to the Aimpoint Micro on my CAV-15, which is a better fit for this rifle anyway due to weight savings.  16th/79 Shooters.

TCB Holsters XenoMod

I’ve carried this Glock 34 since 2005.  In 2011 after the factory finish was eaten away and pitted from sweating all over it during the hot months in Arizona, I had it Nickel Boron coated.  Two years later the Nickel Boron coating was wearing through from sweating on it during daily carry.  Even with daily wipe downs it kept getting worse.

It became clear that the corrosion was forming at the back of the pistol where the sweat guard on my holster stopped.  After 8 years of carry it was time to retire the old pistol and get a new one.  It was also time to get a new holster.

TCB Holsters is a custom holster manufacturer located in San Tan Valley, AZ.  I met with the owner, Jason, and showed him my old holster and the corrosion problem I was having on my Glock.  Jason said extending the sweat guard all the way up past the back of the slide wouldn’t be a problem.  A few weeks later my new holster was done.

In addition to protecting against sweat, the XenoMod also is more comfortable because it keeps the rear sight from being able to press into the body.  If you use sights with sharp edges or serrations this is another big advantage in comfort.
